Markings

DOT manages and maintains over 350 million linear feet of markings in New York City. Pavement markings are vital for guiding people through our roadways safely, serving as essential communicators of spatial information within our right-of-way.

Pavement markings and color surface treatments are used to effectively organize and allocate roadway space. This includes vehicle lanes, bus lanes, bike and micromobility lanes, and pedestrian areas. Pavement markings delineate these spaces and communicate essential messages to users, while color surface treatments highlight specific areas and designate their use. Together, these tools enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and ensure that roadway users have clearly defined spaces.

Pavement Markings

Pavement markings are essential for road safety as they delineate lanes, guide traffic flow, and convey vital information to road users. DOT utilizes Preformed Marking, Extruded Marking, and Sprayed Marking application methods to apply lane markings, crosswalks, hatching, letters, and symbols to our roadways.

Color Surface Treatments

Color Surface Treatments for pedestrian areas are used to quickly provide additional space to alleviate congested sidewalks, create opportunities for public seating and art, and calm traffic. Painted pedestrian areas are utilized in DOT's operational projects to swiftly address the need for increased pedestrian space until a capital project can be implemented.
