Usage: Standard
Pavement Markings generally consist of either a thermoplastic or polyurea material. Within that context, there are three different application methods: extruded (thermoplastic), preformed (thermoplastic), and sprayed (polyurea). Pavement markings are standard materials that are installed and maintained by DOT.
Benefits
See Pavement Markings Table for specific benefits of each material type and application method
- Markings delineate different road user groups and convey critical information
Considerations
- Follow established industry standards and local regulations
- Markings should be visible and easy to identify in all lighting conditions, including at night and in inclement weather
- The placement of the markings must be carefully planned to ensure they communicate their intended messages effectively and do not cause confusion intended users
- Materials used for the markings should be environmentally friendly and safe for all road users
- Markings should be durable and long-lasting, so they do not fade or wear away quickly
- When removing markings consider surface prep, water blasting with vacuum recovery, and scarification. The agency does not permit blackout of existing markings as a substitute for removal
Application
- See Pavement Markings Table for specific application guidance
- Markings should be applied consistent with the MUTCD, unless otherwise approved by DOT
