The Street Design Manual is New York City’s comprehensive resource for street design standards, guidelines, and policies. It draws from a wide range of resources and experience to present a coherent set of choices for street design. This Manual was created and published by the NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) with contributions from a wide array of professionals from city government and the design field.

New!Street Design Manual: Updates

Since COVID-19, DOT has reimagined the role of public space, transforming the public right-of-way into more inclusive, accessible, and vibrant spaces for all users. Since the 2020 update, DOT has completed major projects that have made our streets safer, including converting a record amount of space for pedestrian use, installing a record number of protected bike lane miles, and reducing speeding across the five boroughs. These efforts reflect DOT’s dedication to ensuring our streets serve as dynamic public spaces for all New Yorkers.

As we continue to update the Manual, we have refreshed the Materials chapter, featuring expanded guidelines for materials selected and used for sidewalks, curbs, and roadways. Explore the latest additions now and stay tuned for additional updates coming this spring.
