Cast-in-Place Steel-Faced Concrete

Usage: Standard

Steel facing provides additional protection to a Cast-in-Place Concrete Curb and is typically utilized in areas with significant vehicular traffic such as along bus or truck routes. Concrete Steel-Faced curbs can be pigmented to match the adjacent sidewalk (See Pigmented Concrete [Dark] and Pigmented Concrete [Historic Materials]).

Benefits

See benefits of Cast-in-Place Concrete

  • Protects the concrete curb from being damaged over time

Considerations

  • Steel facing adds cost to the installation of curbs; consider using only where necessary to protect the curb from damage by heavy vehicles
  • Concrete curbs without steel facing are more vulnerable to breakage or crumbling
  • Steel faced drop curbs per Standard Detail H-1015 should not be used where bike lanes cross curbs

Application

  • Steel facing should be used on streets where repeated mounting by heavy vehicles may cause damage
  • Typical for bus routes, truck routes, and commercial areas
