Bike Corral

Bike Corrals are clusters of bike racks installed in the roadbed. Corrals are installed where demand for bicycle parking exceeds the available sidewalk space.

Description

  • 35 feet minimum length by 7 feet minimum width
  • Powder-coated or galvanized steel
  • Curbside bulb out is preferred

Siting

  • Installed only in the roadbed:
    • 3 feet minimum from the curb line
    • 4 feet from the double white line of the travel lane if in the floating lane (i.e. offset crossings)
  • Clearances:
    • 15 feet: fire hydrants
    • 10 feet: driveways
    • 5 feet: above-ground structures
    • 3 feet: grates, utility covers
  • Cannot site within bus stops, taxi stands or hotel loading zones

 

Installation

  • DOT designs bike corrals specific to the site
  • Some designs include large planter pots, others granite or concrete blocks.
  • Installation is done by DOT
