Litter Basket

DSNY manages over 23,000 litter baskets across NYC, including 3,000 for recycling. In fall 2023, DSNY began replacing the old green wire mesh baskets with the new "Better Bins." These rat-resistant, leak-proof baskets are easier and safer for pedestrians and Sanitation Workers to use, while preventing misuse and keeping trash off the ground. Designed by Group Project and named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2023, the Better Bins will be installed citywide over the coming years.

Siting

  • Commercial areas, where they may be emptied as frequently as five times a day<
  • Mixed-use areas, where they can be serviced on residential refuse routes along with household trash two or three times a week
