Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI)

Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) signs use GPS tracking technology from MTA Bus Time to provide riders with up-to-the-minute wait-time information for city buses. This data is projected onto easy-to-read LED displays, improving convenience and accessibility for transit users.

From 2017 to 2019, RTPI signs were installed at over 500 locations, primarily at bus stops along Select Bus Service (SBS) routes. This effort was part of DOT's commitment to enhancing the transit experience by delivering real-time information along key transit corridors. RTPI is also provided via WalkNYC Wayfinding signs at certain locations.

DOT is developing pilot projects to explore next-generation RTPI technology. These efforts aim to deliver improved wait-time displays and expand RTPI installations more broadly across all boroughs.
