Site Fencing

Site fencing refers to the permanent fencing typically utilized around city-owned property, yards, or facilities. While material types may vary, chain-link, wrought iron, or panelized fence systems are most common. These fences often provide an opportunity for art. The agency or entity whose property where the fence is located on is typically responsible for maintenance.

Jackson Avenue, Queens

Description

  • Chain-link fencing is common for many yards and facilities throughout the City. The material is widely available and simple to install and maintain. 2-inch by 2-inch or 1-inch by 1-inch galvanized mesh is most common depending on security and visibility requirements
  • Wrought iron or similar fencing is typically utilized in more historic contexts. This material is generally more expensive and may require regular touch-ups to maintain its appearance
  • Panelized fence systems vary in material and cost. DOT has developed the “El-Fence”, a modular system that can accommodate solid or perforated corrugated metal panels (approximately 3 feet by 3 feet) as well as chain-link cut to fit within the steel frames and posts
  • Site fencing is typically between 8 to 10 feet tall, depending on context, use, and security requirements
  • Additional anti-climb or other deterrents may be present
  • Wind-screens or similar attachments may be utilized
  • All fencing must be designed to meet structural and engineering requirements
  • Advertising is not allowed, but consider opportunities for Public Art

Siting

  • Site fencing is typically located at the property line
  • Consider site access and the location of any gates; minimize conflicts with pedestrians and cyclists where possible and conduct auto-turn analysis to ensure the typical design vehicles can access the facility

Installation

  • DOT personnel install and maintain fencing for DOT properties; refer to the agency with jurisdiction over the property for other locations
  • Non-standard fencing will require an agreement with DOT
