Pavement Markings

Usage: Standard

Pavement Markings generally consist of either a thermoplastic or polyurea material. Within that context, there are three different application methods: extruded (thermoplastic), preformed (thermoplastic), and sprayed (polyurea). Pavement markings are standard materials that are installed and maintained by DOT.

  • Follow established industry standards and local regulations
  • Markings should be visible and easy to identify in all lighting conditions, including at night and in inclement weather
  • The placement of the markings must be carefully planned to ensure they communicate their intended messages effectively and do not cause confusion intended users
  • Materials used for the markings should be environmentally friendly and safe for all road users
  • Markings should be durable and long-lasting, so they do not fade or wear away quickly
  • When removing markings consider surface prep, water blasting with vacuum recovery, and scarification. The agency does not permit blackout of existing markings as a substitute for removal
