Waste Containerization

New York City generates approximately 44 million pounds of trash per day, produced by 8.3 million residents. DSNY is undertaking a comprehensive transformation in how waste is managed, aiming to shift from bagged trash on sidewalks to containerized systems that enhance cleanliness, reduce rodent infestations, and improve the efficiency of waste collection.

Containerization involves using sealed, rodent-resistant receptacles instead of loose trash bags. DSNY is engaged in multiple efforts to test and refine methods that work best for New York City’s unique urban landscape. These efforts aim to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of containerized waste solutions while addressing space constraints and operational considerations. DSNY works closely with DOT in the placement of waste containers in the public right of way.

Description

Residential

  • As of November 12, 2024, all properties with 1–9 residential units are required to set out their trash in bins, 55 gallons or less, with secure lids. Any bin that meets these requirements can be used until June 2026.
  • After June 2026, all properties with 1–9 residential units will be required to use the Official NYC Bin for trash set out. For more information, visit the DSNY FAQ Page.
  • To address residential waste in buildings with more than 10 units, DSNY is conducting the M9 Containerization Pilot in Manhattan’s Community District 9 (M9) starting in June 2025. The container a property uses will be determined based on the number of residential units:
    • 10–30 unit buildings have a choice between using an Empire Bin (on-street container) or individual bins with secure lids that are 55 gallons or less.
    • 30+ unit buildings will be assigned Empire Bins (on-street container) for waste set out and collection.
    • For more information, visit the M9 Containerization Pilot webpage.
