DOT is working tirelessly to build roadways, plazas, and sidewalks that are accessible to all. All new projects must pursue designs that comply with ADA and PROWAG requirements generally. However, project stakeholders and designers should also consider how activations may impact the use of a particular site for people with disabilities. Some considerations include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Activations should account for clear and unobstructed circulation paths throughout the space.
- If seating is provided, make sure to include ADA compliant seating and companion seating
- Temporary signage associated with the activation should comply with ADA requirements (i.e. cane detectable, brail or audio/visual guidance, etc.)
In addition, consider how to encourage people with disabilities to engage with an activation. Be cognizant of how to provide information during an activation. A management, staffing and operations plan may be needed to facilitate accessibility within the space as well as to allow people with disabilities to participate in an activation.
