Public Art

DOT’s public art program—NYC DOT Art—partners with community-based nonprofit organizations and professional artists to present temporary public artwork (up to 11 months) on eligible DOT infrastructure throughout the City. Streets, plazas, and other eligible transportation infrastructure serve as canvases and foundations for murals, sculptures, projections, and art interventions.

There are many opportunities for temporary art installations in the public right-of-way. NYC DOT Art Partners (formerly “Arterventions”) facilitates self-funded, community-led temporary artworks. Partner organizations may include Business Improvement Districts, nonprofits, galleries, arts councils, and other community-based organizations. Organizations interested in displaying temporary artwork that is newly commissioned or existing must obtain necessary permits. Partner organizations and/or artists are responsible for funding these projects.

NYC DOT Art funds site-specific art installations to engage artists and enhance public spaces. Artists are selected through an open call process and matched with selected sites to support DOT Operational Projects, Citywide Signature Events, and through commissions in partnerships with local organizations.

NYC DOT Art also manages a Permanent Art Collection on NYC DOT property commissioned in collaboration with the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) Percent for Art Program.
